The Well of Hajar
Co-creator, Videographer and Editor (in development)
THE WELL OF HAJAR is a VR experimental documentary on the historical figure Hajar. It uses collage, fragmentation and archival footage to explore who Hajar was. The film is set against the backdrop of the current day Hajj, where the experience of Hajar’s ritual has been reduced to an air-conditioned and tiled walk between the two mountains which are now fragments behind glass encasings.
The Well of Hajar was conceptualised and written by Shameelah Khan, towards her Master’s research at UCT (2025).
The VR film was directed by Shameelah Khan in collaboration with Nicola Pilkington and Geoffrey Diver. Analogue collage artworks were created by Shameelah Khan and Geoffrey Diver, and performances by Shameelah Khan and Sara Lagardien Abdullah. Videography and Edit by Nicola Pilkington, and Sound Composition and Design by Geoffrey Diver.
