The Tunnels
Creator (2024)
The Tunnels is a fabulated short documentary imagining an underground queer utopia beneath 1990s Johannesburg CBD. Drawing on existing ephemera and oral histories, the film blends speculative storytelling with altered archival material to explore the intersections of speculative storytelling and memory-making.
Told through the fictionalised character of Nik, a filmmaker and queer rights activist now in her 60s, the film unravels the mythos of The Tunnels - a secret sanctuary for queer life and resistance beneath Johannesburg in the early 1990s. The film uses fictional tapes and photographs to reconstruct this imagined world while reflecting on the tensions between memory, imagination, and history. The documentary becomes both a meditation on the act of creating a documentary with generative AI, and an act of reclamation of gaps in our queer histories - how we might envision radical futures.
The documentary draws on the oral histories and archives of Sue Charlton, Bev Ditsie, Simon Nkoli, Donne Rundle, and GALA Queer Archives.
