Double Negative

Concept, Editor and Sound Designer (2014/2018)

A short experimental documentary that explores the polar and palimpsestic Afropolis that is Johannesburg.

Inspired by the device of writing the city, Double Negative draws on apparatuses as seen in Ivan Vladislavic's book 'Portrait with Keys', Dziga Vertov's film 'Man with the Movie Camera' or Walter Ruttmann's film 'Berlin: Symphony of a Metropolis'. The product does not merely reflect the subject of the City, but the mode and medium of the film itself. 'Double Negative' poetically captures the new layers and residues of the people and politics that puzzle the city together.

Double Negative made official selection for the 2019 TRANSFER Architecture Video Festival in Zurich; the 8th official Istanbul International Architecture and Urban Film Festival in Turkey; Africa in Motion Film Festival in Glasgow and the Unseen Festival presented by Counterpath in Denver, USA. It was also screened along side work from William Kentridge at the VIDEOEX Experimental Film & Video Festival in Zurich as part of the African Metropolises series: Johannesburg, Excavating the Future in a Place of Longing.
